Jean Prouvé, who saw himself as a constructor all his life, was both a designer and a producer of his designs. His unique oeuvre encompasses almost everything that can be constructed and industrially manufactured, from letter openers to door and window fittings, lighting and furniture to prefabricated houses and modular building systems.

His designs also include the Rayonnage wall shelf, which was created in 1936.

The shape of the two wall brackets of the Rayonnage Mural bookshelf shows a recurring element in Prouvé's design work with its 'streamlined' shape, reminiscent of the rudder of an airplane or ship.
