When developing the Toldbod product range, the Louis Poulsen design team was inspired by the reflector part of the PH Eclipse: the last street lighting concept by Poul Henningsen. Launched in 1982, the Toldbod 290 outdoor luminaires were the first products in the range. They were such a great success that they were soon followed by the Toldbod Glass indoor luminaires. Later, the metal pendant lights were added, and four larger versions were added in 2019. The Toldbod pendant luminaire emits the majority of the light downwards. This is in line with Poul Henningsen's philosophy of giving light a shape and illuminating rooms without shining it directly into people's eyes. The matt white lacquered inside of the elliptical shade contributes to an even light distribution. This makes the luminaire ideal for both targeted and general lighting. The philosophy behind the original Toldbod pendant luminaire by Louis Poulsen is: the simpler the design, the greater the flexibility. The soft and precise shape of the Toldbod works very well as a single installation. But it also works beautifully in row or group installations - either in a single shade or in a colorful palette.
