The VL Studio series traces its origins to a lamp designed by architect Vilhelm Lauritzen in the 1940s for the Radiohuset (the “Radio House,” headquarters of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation) in Copenhagen. The name “Studio” was chosen because some of the lamps were installed in front of the recording studios to indicate—with red or green light—whether a recording was in progress. Vilhelm Lauritzen was the architect behind the Radiohuset, which was inaugurated in 1945 as a functionalist design. The Radiohuset is—like most of Lauritzen’s buildings—a total work of art, meaning that he designed the entire interior and every detail of the building for the project. While developing the Radiohuset, Lauritzen designed an extensive collection of lamps in close collaboration with Louis Poulsen. For this project, Lauritzen created the Studio lamp, the VL 38 (VL38) table lamp, the Radiohus pendant lamp (VL45), and the VL Ring Crown lamps. After their creation in the 1940s, the lamps were produced by Louis Poulsen. Over the years, however, they were all discontinued. The VL45 (Radiohus pendant lamp) and the VL38 (table lamp, which originally came from the building’s interior design) were reintroduced to the market in 2016, the VL Ring Crown in 2019, and most recently the VL Studio lamp in 2022. The VL Studio lamp is closely related to the Radiohus pendant lamp; both use opal glass to create a diffused light that provides pleasant ambient lighting around the lamp
