Some objects are so beautiful that it almost doesn't matter whether they light up or not. The Saffo lamp is one such object.
Angelo Mangiarotti designed it in 1966 and it immediately became a coveted vintage object. No wonder. The Italian architect, sculptor and designer had a gift that cannot be taught: He knew how shapes and materials talk to each other.
The Saffo is made of mouth-blown glass. White at the bottom, opaque - the light source elegantly concealed. Then, very gradually, as the mushroom-shaped silhouette unfolds upwards, the white turns into transparency. The light breaks through, soft and diffuse, illuminating every nuance of the glass.
An experience when switched on. A sculpture when switched off.
This is how a lamp should be.
