Poul Henningsen designed hundreds of lamps based on the three-shade system he developed in 1926, which provides unparalleled light quality for all kinds of needs. Many of his lighting designs are identified by a number that refers to the shade proportions of the respective fixture. The PH 3/3 is described as a full-size pendant light and is characterized by its attractive, compact appearance. PH’s full-size lamps are specifically designed to be glare-free and are therefore ideal for mounting high in the room, where they combine high-quality lighting with a cozy atmosphere. The better-known hybrid versions, on the other hand, are designed to hang low and provide optimal lighting and a warm atmosphere, for example, over a table. The full-size lamps appear rounder than the slightly slimmer hybrid versions, allowing for a different aesthetic while still being unmistakably PH. In addition to the variety of shade configurations and their influence on the light quality and aesthetics of the individual lamps, Poul Henningsen’s rational lighting system also takes into account the construction of the lampshades to control glare and shadows. In 1929, the system was further developed to meet lighting requirements and ensure the highest quality of light.
