The L'Art Noir carpet was created during a creative phase in which Gray - influenced by movements such as the Bauhaus - intensively explored minimalism, symbolic geometry and material honesty. Various original gouaches depicting the round carpet illustrate how intensively Eileen Gray explored the psychological effect of colors. The studies show how she varied the proportion of black within the colors and juxtaposed them in a segmented circle. This exploration of "black art" is directly reflected in the name L'Art Noir, which aptly sums up the design concept behind the carpet. One of these colour studies served as the template for the hand-knotted rug produced by ClassiCon, which is characterized by four concentric circles, each consisting of two contrasting halves of colour.
The colors used are reminiscent of the stormy sea, the light sand and the gentle vegetation of a beach - an atmospheric interplay that makes the origins of the rug almost tangible. The original L'Art Noir rug was located in Eileen Gray's Villa E1027 on the Côte d'Azur, where it was a striking design accent that characterized the timeless modernity of the room.
