The entrance to the 'disco' is inviting, bright & lively
What a beautiful entrance I am greeted by at Anne's: lots of light, lots of life and lots of pink. Perfect for conveying a feeling of living and making you feel at home straight away, dear Anne!
Incidentally, the entrance is also what gave the house its promising name, House of Disco: the homemade disco light with the colorful neon tubes and the flashing light ball in the entrance, which provide a lot of party feeling in everyday life. Together with the light-colored wood, which can be found throughout the house, and the staircase with terrazzo flooring, this color scheme looks particularly modern.
Interview with Anne tu Quoc 👀❤️
Dear Anne, may we ask you a few questions?
Perhaps you've already seen the video? In any case, I don't want to withhold Anne's exciting answers to my questions from you in writing.
What was your concept for the house at the start of the makeover?
I DIDN'T REALLY HAVE A CONCEPT - IT ALL DEVELOPED 'NA DIS NA'
- Anne tells me with her honest and refreshing manner, which makes her so likeable and appealing. Also in her Insta account @ourhouseofdisco again and again. Where she admits quite simply and très sympa that despite the many perfectly styled pictures of her, her work and her home, not everything is always 'insta-like'. And there is also a lot of chaos in the House of Disco.
The playful, natural and very modern interior design was first and foremost developed in her head:
I HAVE A VISUAL MEMORY AND CAN DIRECTLY IMAGINE WHAT A ROOM COULD LOOK LIKE.
Anne's starting point for the design was a lot of maritime pine wood and white, based on which she developed the colors. She also had doubts from time to time, but gained a lot of confidence through trial and error.
WE MOVED IN FIRST AND THEN I CHANGED THINGS STEP BY STEP AND BROUGHT IN COLOR.
She tells me that she looked at the house and immediately clicked. That she bought a dream without a concept that gradually developed. She first had to feel the house and get to know it. And I admire how quickly she recognized the potential of the somewhat outdated house. She wasn't put off by all the carpeting, the dark wood paneling and the 80s smell. On the contrary: on the day of the viewing, the creative doer already had far too many ideas on how she could transform the old house into a bright, modern family home with color and charm. After just six months of renovations, she now lives happily and contentedly with her husband and two teenage sons in the colorful house in the countryside near Fribourg.
What was the most difficult part of the renovation?
FINDING THE TIME
Of course, there are many hurdles to overcome in any project. But what has Anne learned from the huge redesign project? Everything takes TIME. More time. The construction site has to be visited several times a day. It takes a lot of coordination and precise communication. That's something I've also learned from my own work in interior design. Time is important, talking to each other, examples, pictures, plans. We all have different ideas, a different universe and different dreams. Therefore: taking time, talking, showing and doing a lot helps to prevent frustration, even if it seems tedious at the moment.
I'm lucky that I'm self-employed. So I was able to organize my time well and often accompany the construction work on site. And of course I also had to put something on the back burner at work and postpone it until later. But it was worth it to be fully involved.
Which room is your favorite?
MY FAVORITE ROOM IS THE LIVING ROOM. AND THE KITCHEN. The living room is the place where the family comes together. Where we exchange ideas, enjoy ourselves and relax. It is flooded with light and offers a view of the garden, which Anne particularly appreciates. The latter is still a building site, but I'm sure it will soon look wonderful here too and the great terrace will provide plenty of space for outdoor living and a nice selection of outdoor furniture.
In addition to light wood, lots of pink and colorful accents, Anne also loves playing with mirrors and metallic surfaces. Anne loves metallics and everything that shines and shimmers! Her mirrored wardrobe is an eye-catcher in the living room and adds depth to the room, as do the exciting contrasts with the famous butterfly chair and the rustic fireplace.
Anne made the coffee tables herself - they also feature a great mix of marble and wood, with beautiful curves that create a common thread in the house.
The colorfully stacked, smaller side table is reminiscent of the Brio stacking clown, but is elegant and creatively chic through and through. It is from the Danish label & Tradition and can be customized, which suits Anne and her personality perfectly.
Anne makes the floors homely with colorful rugs from Morocco. These are traditional Beni Ourain or Azilal-style rugs, which also reflect her penchant for craftsmanship.
The kitchen is openly connected to the living room, so it is also legitimate that she does not have to choose ONE room. The beautiful dining room table forms a kind of transition and is an important place for the young family. Here, too, there is a lot of wood. Light-colored wood with a beautiful grain that radiates naturalness and sustainability. A little used wood that brings history and depth. And provides a wonderful stage for the many colors!
White and lots of feminine pink everywhere brings ambiance and coziness. The Panton Chair with its soft curves matches the vintage wood of the table perfectly and creates great contrasts.
The devil is in the detail - this also applies to every corner and every arrangement in the House of Disco! Everything is lovingly put together, arranged and provides a lot of eye-catchers and living happiness with color, the unexpected and the special.
Her penchant for lights of all kinds is obvious, and I was particularly taken with the beautiful lighting of the dining room table with the beautifully designed lights from Louis Poulsen.
You can find lots of inspiration for your own personal lighting in my video about her passion - because lamps are so much more than just a source of light!
What is your next project?
I WOULD LIKE TO HELP SOME FRIENDS TO REALIZE THEIR OWN LIVING DREAMS.
In addition, the GARDEN is still a big issue, there is still a raw building site here. There's also a bathroom to do and a room that's still completely untouched. I'm particularly looking forward to completely redesigning it.
THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT, INSPIRING ANSWERS, DEAR ANNE! I'D LOVE TO LOOK AROUND A BIT MORE AT YOUR PLACE.
Auch grosse Jungs mögens bunt und kreativ
Anne's two sons have their kingdom on the upper floor of the house. They are already more or less teenagers, but still like color and, despite their absence, seem playful and stylish like their mother.
I really like the fact that boys also have the courage to use color. Creativity also seems to be in their blood, because I find pens and other creative utensils everywhere.
The master bedroom on the upper floor brings out the best in the beautiful mix of patterns, colors and shapes. Here, too, the light-colored wood acts as a canvas that brings naturalness and calm to the furnishings. The colors and patterns work particularly well here!
With Anne, even the basement is colorful & creative
A huge surprise awaits me in the cellar of the family's fine home. It's not dark and grey, but beautifully finished and colorful! The stairs and the floor are a bright mint green. And the walls, my dears, are decorated with great block stripes in the same color as white. Creates a Riviera and vacation feeling, dear Anne!
I've staged the iconic Altorfer lounger from Embru there to match this vacation feeling. It's perfect for Anne to dream about her upcoming vacation while her terrace is still under construction. I'm sure that her outdoor space with the wooden terrace, which is unfortunately still a building site at the moment, will also be wonderful. It will be a wonderful place to switch off, enjoy and dream - which Anne will certainly furnish with the perfect outdoor furniture and selected, yet natural flora.
We work with passion here
In Anne's colorful basement, I also find the studio of her sustainable label Petit Mai - which was already an important Mooris partner in my early days. Incidentally, Anne started knitting hats in her twenties during her seasonal job in a mountain village. Anne's hat fever quickly spread there and everyone wore her exceptionally beautiful - and of course colorful - hats. It quickly became clear what she was good at! She was able to inspire other people with her style, novelty and craftsmanship.
She still benefits from this today, as her label has developed over the years - and a few children later - from great knitwear to a reference for beautiful mocassins and blankets for babies and toddlers. Mocassins and blankets for babies and toddlers, exceptionally beautifulbags, personalized key rings and many other leather products . She develops all the products herself and produces them with the help of a seamstress - and you can see that in the beautiful accessories. They are well thought-out, practical and exceptionally beautifully designed. Anne also only uses vegetable-tanned leather, which is processed in a small workshop in southern Germany - something I particularly appreciate for reasons of sustainability.
YOU CAN ALSO BUY THE BEAUTIFUL BAGS & KEY RINGS FROM PETIT MAI AT MOORIS.CH FROM 21.5.
