The Barcelona chair is a classic example of a typical Knoll Studio design, manufactured according to the original specifications of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The exclusive manufacturing and distribution rights were transferred from the designer to Knoll in 1953. The KnollStudio logo and Mies van der Rohe's signature are embossed on the base of each chair.
The frame is made of polished chrome, which is finished by hand to a high gloss. The chair consists of 40 individual parts, the matching stool of 16 parts, which are hand-cut and covered with leather and handmade buttons from a single cowhide. The cushions are made of high-quality, fire-retardant, highly elastic urethane foam and have a down-like Dacron polyester fiber filling. The seat and backrest of the chair are connected by a removable pin.
The cushions are available in fine leather, while the frame is made of polished chrome.
The Barcelona chair was awarded the Museum of Modern Art Prize in 1977.
