Carl Hansen & Søn CH22 Lounge Chair The CH22 Lounge Chair went into production in 1950 and was part of Hans J. Wegner's debut collection for Carl Hansen & Søn. All chairs had wooden seats with paper cord instead of an upholstered seat. Today, they are among the designer's best-known and most sought-after designs. The timeless icon of modern Danish design After the chair had not been produced for several decades, Carl Hansen & Søn put the CH22 Lounge Chair by Hans J. Wegner back into production in 2016. The large, striking wooden back of the chair with visible cover caps catches the eye at first glance, but a closer look reveals further signature details by Wegner. On the sides, for example, you can see that the armrest wraps around the side stretcher and the seat frame and then extends to its full width under the armrest to give it optimum support. At the backrest, the paper cords of the seat are guided downwards around the seat frame and through a horizontal groove in the back rail. There are two ingenious joints at the front of the seat where the front legs lead up through the hand-assembled corners. Although production has of course been modernized, the CH22 is still manufactured today according to the same craftsmanship principles as in 1950, when the first examples were made in Carl Hansen's family workshop and Wegner himself was involved in the production process. In the meantime, modernization of the manufacturing process has improved precision, and the chair's front legs, which were originally round, now have the same profile as the back legs. They are now produced as Wegner originally designed them in his technical drawing. There, the legs are guided upwards through the seat frame and fixed in place with wedges. Designer Hans J. Wegner Hans J. Wegner is regarded as one of the most creative, innovative and productive Danish furniture designers. Wegner is often referred to as the "master of chairs" - and he created almost 500 chairs in his lifetime, many of which are considered masterpieces. He is probably best known for his iconic Wishbone Chair, which has been in continuous production since 1950. The core of Wegner's legacy is his desire to bring the inner qualities - the soul - of furniture to the outside, where its simplicity and functionality can be appreciated.
