With a masterful sense of form and function, Miguel Milá has distilled the three basic elements of every lamp down to their essence: structure, electrical components, and lampshade. A first section of the stem rises from a cross-shaped base; it has a square cross-section and transitions to a round shape halfway up. A lightweight frame holds the lamp holder, to which a lampshade is attached; the shade can be rotated around its own axis, and its height can be adjusted with a simple rubber ring—like a sail hoisted on a mast. And, of course, the characteristic on/off switch: a gentle tug on the cord. This member of the TM family—Tramo Móvil en Madera (movable wooden section)—is the laid-back alternative, the “blue-jeans” version of the collection. It was Miguel Milás’s first collaboration with Santa & Cole, launched in 1986, and perhaps the most famous work by this pioneer of Spanish industrial design, which he created at the age of just 25.
