How a Friendship Became a Light Fixture: A Look Behind the Scenes at Baltensweiler

When two friends and longtime partners join forces, the results are bound to be great. Mooris and the long-established company Baltensweiler are united not only by a long-standing partnership but also by shared values: a love of home and of the things that make life more beautiful—paired with a penchant for tradition and visionary foresight.

What could be more natural than choosing our shared favorite light fixture for a very special collaboration? Exactly—the iconic FEZ light.
​

The idea: to breathe new life and modernity into this classic and give the minimalist light even more attention and a contemporary edge with a maximalist color. A play on contrasts.

Anyone who knows me (I’m Jeannette von Mooris) knows that I love shades of rose and pink. Especially the warm shades, because they make any room feel cozier and really boost your sense of well-being. The NCS color with the perfect tone was therefore easy to find: S 0550-Y90R warm, soft, and modern.

By the way, we have Steffi, our Commercial Manager, and her negotiating skills to thank for making the dream of a pink lamp a reality. And, of course, the wonderful flexibility, foresight, and courage of Baltensweiler, which make such limited, small-batch productions possible in the first place.

The project had officially kicked off, and just a few weeks later, Mariya and I—dressed in matching pink—were standing in front of Baltensweiler’s headquarters near Lucerne.

The building houses a studio, workshop, production area, assembly area, and offices all under one roof.
​
A beautiful late-summer day—the gorgeous morning light plays off the iconic lamps in the office cafeteria, creating a stunning display on the wall.
​

We received an incredibly warm and professional welcome. We could tell right away: Ria Baltensweiler runs the company in a very family-oriented way, with great care and dedication. Personal and family-oriented—much like at Mooris.
​
To kick things off, we had the opportunity to conduct interviews in the inspiring design studio with designer Lukas Niederberger and CEO Ria Baltensweiler. Ernst Kehrli, photographer and head of content at Baltensweiler, was a huge help to us during this process. He, too, demonstrated the same attention to detail and precision that you find at Baltensweiler in every lighting fixture and in every employee.

At Baltensweiler, attention is paid to every detail—in design, manufacturing, and assembly.
​
This passion and determination also stem from founder Rosemarie Baltensweiler, whose courage and spirit live on through Ria. Ria shares more about this in an interview that is both moving and inspiring.
​

In the workshop, we met Roland and Fabian—true masters of their craft who impressed us with their precision and incredibly skillful work processes.
​
Here, standpipes are turned, brass bearings are milled, covers are laser-cut, and linkages are prepared. And Mariya filmed it all, with Ernst’s active support handling the lighting.
​
Our pink was also an absolute eye-catcher among the machines, and we could hardly wait to see the result: the finished lamp in my dream color.

The memory on our camera and smartphones was already almost full of exciting content when we headed upstairs to the assembly area. There, Marina showed us how she assembles the FEZ toggle switches and solders the LEDs—as well as many other assembly steps, right up to the perfect packaging. Here, too, the Pink Edition of the FEZ lamp—both as individual parts and, of course, fully assembled—was a real eye-catcher—one that, in the beautiful morning light, stole the show a bit from all the other lamp parts in the assembly area.

I was particularly touched by how delighted Ria Baltensweiler was—she immediately captivated me all over again. She truly lives and breathes these iconic lights, yet remains so incredibly open to new ideas. Amazing.

And then there’s Ruth: a true original who immediately won me over with her wonderful personality.
​

She skillfully assembles the FEZ and handles the final assembly with such ease that she could probably do it perfectly even with her eyes closed.
​
I was particularly fascinated by her calmness and patience as she demonstrated each step for us over and over again until we understood it and had it down pat.

After assembly and production, we set up the finished lamp on-site in an industrial style. And we’re thrilled with it and the effect it creates.
​

The Fez’s clean design language, combined with its warm, soft color, makes a powerful statement and creates exciting contrasts—here in the studio and in your home.
​
The dimmable light fixture makes a strong statement even when unlit, but gains even more warmth when switched on. And the pink version even takes on a subtle orange glow.
​

Baltensweiler is inspiring. A wonderful company that, through craftsmanship, tradition, great care, and foresight, creates lighting fixtures that do more than just deliver on their promises.
