The production history of Hans J. Wegner’s Oculus Chair CH468 is somewhat unusual. During a visit to Wegner’s design studio, several photographs and a small clay model of an armchair from the 1960s piqued the interest of Carl Hansen & Søn. Once Wegner’s technical drawings of the chair were discovered and Carl Hansen & Søn had the opportunity to closely examine a full-scale prototype of the armchair from 1960, production of the Oculus Chair began in 2010. “Oculus” is the Latin word for “eye” and refers to the eye-shaped seams in the chair’s backrest upholstery. The design ensures that the shoulder blades can sink comfortably into the chair, providing relaxation for both the neck and the back. The distinctive design—featuring a spacious backrest, slanted armrests, and a soft seat cushion—has made the Oculus Chair a favorite. The impressively upholstered upper section of the chair is accentuated by the sleek stainless steel frame with slanted legs.
